Reading custodian quarterly disclosures
What's actually in the footnotes that the press never covers.
The headline numbers tell you the least.
AUM up, AUM down, revenue, profit, capital ratios. These get covered. They are also the most managed of the disclosures. Material events sit further back.
The interesting language is in the footnotes.
Contested receivables. Material weaknesses in internal controls. Regulatory inquiries that have been disclosed but not concluded. Subsequent events not yet reflected in the period covered. Off-balance-sheet items.
What we read for.
Patterns over quarters. A footnote about contested receivables that grew this quarter relative to last. A new regulatory inquiry. A subsequent event suggesting a problem the auditors caught after period close. None panic signals on their own. Together they tell you when a custodian is starting to wobble.
